Monocopter flies with just one wing

Evan Ulrich, a student at the University of Maryland, has produced an MAV (micro air vehicle) with only one wing. It was modeled and named after a maple seed samara, shown at the beginning of the video. The motor and propeller sit on one end of a beam, and a weight on the other end, and the beam is mounted to one side of the wing. The weight of the wing acts as the counterbalance, and voila – flight!

The onboard camera on the Samara can take video which, processed by a computer, could produce panoramic views for intelligence gathering. More commentary and an additional video at [singularityhub]
